Sang-Bender Named Syracuse University Female Scholar Athlete of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Nana Sang-Bender (Syracuse, N.Y.) is the Syracuse University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of October 20, 2008.
The 30th-ranked women’s distance runners tested the site of the NCAA Cross Country Championship Saturday afternoon at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course hosted by Indiana State University.
The Orange women’s team competed in the White Race and placed 11th out of 39 teams with Sang-Bender leading the charge for SU as a result of her team-leading time of 21:16. Sang-Bender finished in 44th place out of 281 individuals in the 6K.
Sang-Bender, one of Syracuse’s most decorated female distance runners, finished second on the Orange’s line-up at both the Spiked Shoe Invitational and Paul Short Invitational in times of 21:48 and 20:56, respectively, earlier this season.
The Syracuse native is a two-time All-BIG EAST recipient and has picked up two BIG EAST Academic All-Star awards. Last season, the nutrition and international relations double major earned Northeast All-Region accolades after finishing 12th with a time of 21:04.55. She was also named ECAC Female Performer of the Week after her performance at the Boston College Invitational.
