SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team avenged its 3-0 loss to Siena in the Big Orange Tournament earlier this season on Tuesday night when it swept the Saints, 3-0. The victory is Syracuse’s fifth-straight win and marks its ninth-straight road win.
“We started out slow, but picked it up,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “We dominated the second set. They were breaking down and we were taking it to them.”
Juniors Kacie MacTavish and Sarah Morton led the Orange in kills, slamming home 12 and 11, respectively. Senior April Quigley set them up and recording 26 assists. Quigley also recorded seven kills on nine attacks for a match-high attack percentage of .778.
Senior Marissa Kanemura stepped it up as the defensive specialist. She posted a career-high 21 digs. Morton led the blocking effort for the Orange defense which out blocked the Saints, 13-2. She recorded seven block assists. Quigley and MacTavish each registered five total blocks in the match.
Both teams started out slow in the first set with neither team developing a lead. With the score 14-10, the Orange would go on a run to tie it up, 14-14. A kill by Saint April London, followed by a kill by SU player Morton, would bring the score to 15-15. From there, Syracuse took control, scoring the next five points. The Saints would fight to 21, but the Orange would win the set.
Syracuse dominated the second set, holding the Saints to only three points. Two Siena timeouts had no affect on the Orange. Junior Shanetha McLaurin would serve 16-straight points for Syracuse and bring the score to 24-3. A good set from Quigley would set up Morton for the kill to give the Orange a 2-0 lead.
Siena took a small early lead in the third set, but couldn’t build the momentum needed to throw off the Orange. By midway through the frame, Syracuse was leading 16-13. A short time later, Syracuse was leading 20-15 and Siena would take a timeout. Two SU points later, Siena used its second timeout, but it wouldn’t be too little too late. The Orange would go on to win the set of a kill from freshman Noemie Lefebvre, 25-20.
“Overall, we had a pretty good match,” LaMarche said. “It was a step up from the Marquette match on Saturday. This win is helpful for us as we head into two BIG EAST matches this weekend.”
The Orange returns home this weekend for two BIG EAST matches. Syracuse commences play at the Women’s Building on Friday, October 24 in a contest with Cincinnati beginning at 7 p.m. The Orange will face Louisville on Sunday, October 26 at 2 p.m.
