SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Marissa Kanemura tallied a career-high 32 digs for the Syracuse Orange (14-10, 5-2 BE) in what turned out to be a five-set thriller between two BIG EAST conference teams. The night ended in favor of the Cincinnati Bearcats (19-5, 6-2 BE), 3-2.
Senior April Quigley set the pace for the Orange offensive attack registering a season-high 50 assists. Freshman Noemie Lefebvre was the Orange leader in kills with 15. Juniors Sarah Morton and Kacie MacTavish recorded 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Lefebvre posted her fifth double-double of the season with 17 digs, while MacTavish had her 10th double-double with 16 digs. Morton led the Orange in total blocks with seven, including three solo. Sophomore Hayley Todd added two solo blocks on the night.
The first set was a back and forth affair for the first part of the frame until the Orange grabbed four-straight points to take a 9-5 lead. A Cincinnati timeout wouldn’t slow the Orange, however. Syracuse would maintain at least a three point lead until back-to-back kills from the Bearcats brought them within two. A Syracuse timeout would stave off Cincinnati enough to establish a 24-20 advantage. When the Bearcats tallied the next point, Syracuse head coach Jing Pu wasn’t taking any chances and took a timeout in an effort to propel the Orange to a 25-21 win.
Cincinnati was not letting the Orange off easy. The second set proved to be long and arduous as the score tied eight different times and the lead changed hands four times. Neither team was able to develop a strong lead. Near the end of the frame with the Bearcats leading 25-24, a service error by Cincinnati would give the Orange a chance to take the lead and win the set. A kill by Bearcat Jessie Nevitt would give the ball back to Cincinnati who would tally the two points needed to win, 27-25.
The Bearcats carried the momentum into the third set as they started off 4-0 before the Orange was able to get on the board. Cincinnati, however, never slowed and Bearcat Jessica Elley would slam home the final kill of the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Orange, despite again falling behind 4-0 at the top of the fourth set, fought back by midway through the frame to tie the set 18-18. From there, the teams took turns serving it seemed as the ball went from one team to the other. Morton would tie the set 24-24 to give the Orange a chance to tie the match 2-2. MacTavish served the final two points and the Bearcats recorded two attack errors to give the Orange the victory.
Syracuse came out on fire in the tiebreaker leading 9-2 and forcing two back-to-back timeouts by Cincinnati. From there, the Orange would tack on four more points to lead, 13-6. However, Cincinnati clawed back on two scoring runs. The first brought the score to 13-11 in favor of the Orange. The second, a six point run, gave the Bearcats the 16-14 win to take the match.
The Syracuse volleyball team is back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. against conference foe Louisville. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m. in the Women’s Building.
