SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Noemie Lefebvre led the Orange with a team-high 15 kills in a 3-1 victory against the UConn Huskies. Syracuse won the first two sets, 25-23 and 26-24, but UConn fought back to win the third set, 25-21. The Orange wasn’t to be denied a win, however, and dominated throughout the fourth set to win, 25-19.
In addition to Lefebvre, junior Sarah Morton tallied 13 kills and had a .591 attack percentage. Junior Kacie MacTavish and sophomore Hayley Todd also contributed to the offense posting 11 and nine kills, respectively. Setting the pace for the Orange offense was senior setter April Quigley who recorded a season-high 42 assists. Quigley, who has a total of 3,022 career assists, is the fifth player in program history to reach the 3,000 mark.
Defensively, four players reached double-figures in digs. Leading the pack was senior Marissa Kanemura with16. Junior Shanetha McLaurin had 14, Lefebvre registered 11 and Quigley tallied 10. Morton led the Orange in blocking with five solo blocks and two block assists. Freshman Erin Little and Todd each had five total blocks for the evening.
“This was the most focused the team has been so far this season,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “Our intensity was at the level we need to be at to win.”
Lefebvre opened the first set with a kill to give the Orange a 1-0 lead. From there, however, the set remained close until the Huskies developed a two-point lead, 15-13. A Syracuse timeout seemed to slow UConn as the Orange was able to contain them and tie the set, 20-20. The score tied three more times before two good sets from Quigley and kills from Todd and Morton closed the set for the Orange, 25-23.
The Huskies took a 3-0 lead in the second set before a service error gave the Orange its first point. Syracuse kept the points coming and tied the match, 5-5. UConn took a timeout before developing a three-point lead. Despite Syracuse taking a timeout in hopes of slowing the Huskies, UConn’s lead increased to seven. However, little by the little the Orange gained momentum. Solo blocks from Morton and Quigley gave the Orange the juice needed to overtake the Huskies. The Orange tied it up 22-22, took the lead 23-22, but allowed the Huskies to grab two points to take the lead, 24-23. Thanks to two UConn errors and a kill by MacTavish, the Orange earned a come-from-behind win in the second set.
After a ten minute intermission, the Huskies took another 3-0 lead the start the third set. UConn maintained the lead until midway through the set when the Orange tied it up, 14-14. The score remained close until the Huskies hit 20. From there, UConn slowed the Orange enough to be the first to 25.
Syracuse took the lead from the start in the fourth set, a lead which it never relinquished. With the Orange holding a three-point lead early on, UConn took a timeout in hopes of cutting SU’s momentum. However, the Orange lead grew to five and UConn took another timeout to no avail. Syracuse gained point after point until the score was 22-12. From there, the Huskies managed to hold Syracuse at 22 for the next five points to bring the score to 22-16. A timeout by Syracuse let the team regroup and Todd closed out the fourth set, 25-19, with a kill.
Syracuse returns to the court in Manley Field House Sunday at 2 p.m. to take on the St. John’s Red Storm.
