CHICAGO, Ill. – The Syracuse University volleyball team (15-12, 6-4 BE) rallied in the fifth set against DePaul to secure a 3-2 win against the Blue Demons Sunday afternoon. Thirteen members of the Orange saw action on the court, five of which recorded at least five kills apiece.
Junior Sarah Morton led the Orange with 12 kills, while junior Kacie MacTavish recorded nine. Freshman Erin Little was third on the team with eight kills and both sophomore Hayley Todd and freshman Noemie Lefebvre tallied five each. Senior April Quigley registered 30 assists in the match and freshman setter Hallie Morse stepped in for a set and had six assists.
On defense, Lefebvre recorded a season-high 22 digs and senior Marissa Kanemura had 16. Seven other members of the Orange stepped it up on defense contributing the rest of SU’s 73 digs. Morton was also the team leader in blocking. She had a season-high nine block assists and on solo block for the match. Quigley and Todd also offered effective blocking for the Orange posting six and five total blocks, respectively.
The Blue Demons took an early 11-7 lead in the first set after going on a five-point run. However, the Orange would rally for seven-consecutive points for a 15-12 advantage. The Orange held onto the lead for the remainder of the frame capitalizing on six Blue Demon errors for a 25-19 win.
The second set was close throughout, but the Blue Demons managed to hold a slight lead for almost the entirety of the set. The Orange took a slight lead toward the end of the frame, but a late Blue Demon push would close the set, 25-23, in favor of DePaul.
After a short intermission, the Orange came back on fire in the third set establishing a strong lead it would never relinquish. By midway through the frame, with the score 16-8, DePaul would take a timeout but it did not slow Syracuse’s momentum. The Orange won the set convincingly, 25-11.
Syracuse started off the fourth set, 2-0, but the lead would be short-lived as the Blue Demons weren’t ready for the match to be over. The Orange and the Blue Demons exchanged control of the lead several times, but a late rally by DePaul would give them a 22-18 lead forcing a Syracuse timeout. Despite Syracuse grabbing the next point, DePaul would secure the win, 25-20, to tie the match, 2-2.
The tiebreaker was all Syracuse as the Orange jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. Too many errors by the Blue Demons gave SU the push it needed to secure the match with a 15-7 fifth-set win.
