SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Syracuse began its final road trip of the 2008 regular season Saturday afternoon at Seton Hall. The Orange was led by junior Sarah Morton who tallied 11 kills and 10 total blocks in the 3-0 setback to the Pirates.
“Seton Hall is one of the best defensive teams in the conference and today they showed that they were deserving of their ranking,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “We’re disappointed and the pressure is on to do well tomorrow against Villanova. We’re in good spirits and will be ready to go offensively against the Wildcats.”
Senior setter April Quigley recorded 22 assists helping eight different teammates record kills. Freshman Noemie Lefebvre followed Morton with six kills, while junior Kacie MacTavish had four.
The Orange out-blocked the Pirates, 12-3, in the match. Joining Morton on defense was Quigley who tallied six block assists. Senior Marissa Kanemura was one of three players to post double-digit digs with 12. Lefebvre and MacTavish had 11 and 10, respectively.
Seton Hall took the lead early in the first set, leading 16-8 by midway through the frame. Syracuse used both of its timeouts in an effort to slow the Pirates’ momentum, and despite trailing by 10 points nearing the end of the set, the Orange were able to fight back within six points. SHU closed the set, 25-19.
The Orange grabbed an early 4-0 lead in the second set, but it would be short-lived as the Pirates would hold SU at four to tie it up. From there, Seton Hall took charge of the set and won, 25-21.
SU would keep the Pirates on edge in the third set holding the lead for most of the first half of the frame. It would be back and forth in the middle for a bit until Seton Hall took control and began to pull away in hopes of preventing a fourth set. Despite Syracuse taking a timeout, the Pirates maintained the advantage and won the third set, 25-18.
Syracuse will be back in action Sunday afternoon at Villanova. The Orange faces the Wildcats at 2 p.m. in the Jake Nevin Field House.
