The Syracuse men's crew team totaled an 8-1 record and retained the Ten Eyck Cup at the 21st annual George Washington Invitational on Saturday.

WASHINGTON – The Syracuse men’s crew team won the Oliver T. Carr Bowl for recording the highest men’s point total with 114 at the 21st Annual George Washington Invitational. The Orange went a combined 8-1 on the day. Syracuse also retained the Ten Eyck Cup with its win against Rutgers. The event is held each April in conjunction with the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Cloudy skies in the morning gave way to intermittent sun and clouds in the afternoon with temperatures climbing into the 70s. A moderate 5-10 mph tailwind and tail-current made for fast racing conditions in the afternoon.
The varsity eight boat of Jamie Hubbell (coxswain), Ryan Armstrong (stroke), Ryan Patton (7 seat), Martin Etem (6 seat), Brian Azeff (5 seat), Tyson Bry (4 seat), Mike Bagnall (3 seat), John Combs (2 seat) and Dan Lombardi (bow) went 2-0 on the day. SU posted a time of 5:36.9 against George Washington and Rutgers during the morning session to retain the Ten Eyck Cup for the third consecutive season. In the marquee race of the day, SU’s varsity eight narrowly defeated Georgetown by 4.1 seconds in the afternoon. The Orange completed the 2,000-meter course in 5:53.6.
It was the 22nd running of the Ten Eyck Cup. Syracuse accomplished a three-peat for the first time since 2001-02, which was the end of six-consecutive wins for the Orange. The Ten Eyck Cup is named after Ned Hanlon Ten Eyck, the son of former SU coach James A. Ten Eyck. The trophy is awarded to the winner of the Syracuse-Rutgers annual race. Ned coached at Rutgers and Syracuse and was also a national champion sculler.
Syracuse won the first Ten Eyck Cup in 1987 and Rutgers won claimed the trophy for the first time the following year. The remainder of the series came in streaks as Syracuse won the next four years, followed by four-consecutive wins by Rutgers. The Orange then claimed six-straight victories over the Scarlet Knights from 1997-2002. Rutgers had won the last three races before Syracuse’s win in 2005-06
The second varsity eight boat of Jack Mutty (coxswain), Mike McHarris (stroke), Clai White (7 seat), Noah Chase (6 seat), Pete Kruse (5 seat), Ryan Knapp (4 seat), Ryan Planer (3 seat), Cam Mackenzie (2 seat) and Mark Vyzas (bow) also went 2-0. Syracuse navigated the 2,000-meter course in 5:44.0 to beat George Washington in the morning. The Orange also defeated Georgetown and Michigan in the afternoon with a time of 5:47.1.
The freshman eight boat of Kenny Marfilius (coxswain), Mike Gennaro (stroke), Vice Berry (7 seat), Dan Turner (6 seat), Dan Berry (5 seat), Matt Hopek (4 seat), Kyle Daugherty (3 seat), Chip Keyes (2 seat) and Julian Morrison (bow) also went 2-0. SU posted a time of 5:46.6 in a victory versus George Washington and Rutgers during the morning session. Syracuse crossed the finish line in 5:44.5 in its win against Georgetown and Michigan in the afternoon.
The second freshman eight boat of Emily Leister (coxswain), Kevin Beargie (stroke), Gerald McNeil (7 seat), Morgan Nowak (6 seat), Peter Themistocles (5 seat), Paul DeNicola (4 seat), Arnes Hadzik (3 seat), Tim Daigle (2 seat) and Matt Sisk (bow) posted a time of 6:08.3 in its loss to Navy during the morning session.
The freshman four (A) boat of Leister (coxswain), Beargie (stroke), McNeil (3 seat), Nowak (2 seat) and Themistocles (bow) defeated Georgetown and Michigan in its lone race with a time of 6:41.0.
The freshman four (B) boat of Patty Hodapp (coxswain), Beargie (stroke), McNeil (3 seat), Nowak (2 seat) and Themistocles (bow) finished the course in 6:54.4 in is victory versus Michigan.
The Orange returns to the water Saturday, April 19 as it rows against Navy and Cornell for the Goes Trophy.
