Men’s Rowing Makes History: Wins Goes Trophy for Third Consecutive Season
4/19/2008 4:12:15 PM | Men's Rowing
ITHACA , N.Y. – The 12th-ranked Syracuse men’s crew team made history today by winning the Goes Trophy for the third consecutive season, a feat that has never been accomplished by the Orange in the 54-year history of Goes Trophy. SU (5:40.9) defeated a Navy (5:42.4) squad with whom it shares its twelfth ranking, by 1.5 seconds and No. 10 Cornell (5:48.6) by 8.3 seconds. Syracuse also won the Stagg Cup for overall points. The crews had ideal rowing conditions, calm water and a slight tail wind, at Cayuga Lake Inlet in Ithaca, New York.
“We really did not talk about winning three consecutive Goes Trophies before or after the race,” head coach Dave Reischman said. “The team has a good sense history and I think the group knows what it accomplished. We put a lot of energy and preparation into getting across the line first. The Goes Trophy is a very tough race and we are fortunate to win one, more less three.”

The varsity eight boat of Jamie Hubbell (coxswain), Ryan Armstrong (stroke), Ryan Patton (7 seat), Martin Etem (6 seat), Brian Azeff (5 seat), Tyson Bry (4 seat), Mike Bagnall (3 seat), John Combs (2 seat) and Dan Lombardi (bow) won Syracuse’s 10th-consecutive cup racing dating back to the 2006 season.
The Goes Trophy was created in 1955 to honor coaches from the three institutions that compete in the yearly race. Clifford “Tip” Goes created the Trophy to memorialize James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. Goes, a 1914 Syracuse graduate, coxswained the varsity eight which won the IRA Regatta in 1913. His life-long interest in rowing led to a chairmanship of the U.S. Olympic Rowing Committee.
Navy leads the Goes Trophy series with 24 wins. The Midshipmen won the first ever race, nine-consecutive from 1979-87, and three straight prior to Syracuse’s victories the past three years. Cornell has 19 victories, winning its first in 1956 and won nine in a row from 1962-70. Syracuse has 10 race wins to its credit, its first coming in 1958.
Syracuse’s freshman eight boat of Kenny Marfilius (coxswain), Mike Gennaro (stroke), Vice Berry (7 seat), Dan Turner (6 seat), Dan Berry (5 seat), Matt Hopek (4 seat), Kyle Daugherty (3 seat), Chip Keyes (2 seat) and Julian Morrison (bow) was also victorious posting a time of 5:51.8. Navy was second at 5:54.9 and Cornell was third at 5:58.6.
The second varsity eight boat of Jack Mutty (coxswain), Mike McHarris (stroke), Clai White (7 seat), Noah Chase (6 seat), Pete Kruse (5 seat), Ryan Knapp (4 seat), Ryan Planer (3 seat), Cam Mackenzie (2 seat) and Mark Vyzas (bow) finished second behind Cornell, 5:52.5-5:56.4. Navy was third at 6:09.4
The second freshman race was restarted at 1,000 meters with crews in relative positions after stopping due to misadventure at bridge. Cornell won the race 3.6 seconds faster than SU’s freshman eight boat of Emily Leister (coxswain), Kevin Beargie (stroke), Gerald McNeil (7 seat), Morgan Nowak (6 seat), Peter Themistocles (5 seat), Paul DeNicola (4 seat), Arnes Hadzik (3 seat), Tim Daigle (2 seat) and Matt Sisk (bow) and 7.5 seconds quicker than Navy.
The Orange returns to the water on Saturday, April 26 at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse located at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park. SU puts its undefeated cup season on the line as it hosts Boston University for the Conlan Cup and Columbia.
