Erika Wachter to Represent Orange at USA Field Hockey's National Futures Championship

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University incoming freshman Erika Wachter joins incoming Nicole Nelson, Heather Susek and Giselle Schlegel at the National Futures Championship held in Virginia Beach, Va. from June 21-16. Watcher will play on the Region 6 New Jersey team. Nelson and Susek will play on the Region 5 Pennsylvania squad, while Schlegel is a member of the Region 2 Massachusetts team. The quad is the first Orange players to be selected to participate in the championship.
Wachter was a three-sport athlete (field hockey, basketball and track & field) at Egg Harbor H.S. She scored 16 goals her senior season and helped lead her team to a school-record of 18-2-2. The Egg Harbor, N.J. native participated in the South Jersey Senior All-Star game in 2007 and in the U16 National Futures Championship in 2006. Watcher was an Ocean City Indoor All-Star and Championship team member from 2004-07. She received first team all-conference honors from the AC Press in 2007 and second-team all-conference from the AC Press in 2005 and 2006. Watcher was named to the All-South Jersey First Team by the Courier Post and to the second-team All-South Jersey by Star Ledger in 2007. She received the Unsung Hero Award from her team in 2007 and was a member of the National Honor Society.
The National Futures Championship is held each year following the Futures Regional Tournament. Currently, the tournament includes 38 teams representing 646 top athletes. The National Futures Championship features 16 under-19 teams, 16 under-16 teams, and 6 under-14 teams. The National Futures Championship is a five day event with the first day designated as a practice day. Selectors at the event choose athletes to attend the Junior National Camp, the AAU Junior Olympic Games and offer invitations to Futures Elite (national best).
