SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After a quick trip home, the Syracuse women’s basketball team travels to Anchorage, Alaska for the 2008 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, slotted to take place on November 25-26 at Anchorage’s Sullivan Arena.
The Orange’s first match-up of the tournament tips-off on Tuesday, November 25 against first-time opponent Jackson State of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The winner of that game will square-off against the victor of the Cal State Northridge – Alaska Anchorage encounter in the championship showdown on Wednesday, November 26. A third-place consolation match is programmed the same day.
The JSU Lady Tigers pose as a formidable opponent after earning their first NCAA Tournament berth last season since 1995 when they emerged victorious out of their conference tournament. Jackson State finished with an 18-14 record, turning in a second-place effort in the SWAC regular-season pursuit.
On the other end of the first-round bracket, two-time defending champion and host Alaska Anchorage looks for its third consecutive tournament victory when UAA takes on a Cal State Northridge team looking to rebound from a 1-26 campaign.
UAA, the only Division II squad listed in the competition, has posted a 4-0 record in its previous two Shootouts in addition to a resounding 53-11 total over the course of the last two seasons. Guided by head coach Tim Moser, the Seawolves wrapped up a 30-5 record last season, qualifying them for the NCAA Division II Semifinals.
If Cal State Northridge were to knock off the Seawolves and Syracuse hits its stride against Jackson State, the Matadors would be the only team SU has faced in the 2008 Shootout field. Syracuse clipped the Big West Conference component on November 19, 2001 by an 80-57 count at the Matadome.
Game times for all four games are undetermined at this juncture. All matches will take place in the Alaska Time Zone, four hours behind the Eastern Time Zone.
The 2008 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout denotes the first trip for each visiting team. SU’s hoopsters have never commenced battle in The Last Frontier although the men claimed victory in this tournament in 2000 against Missouri, 84-62.
