SYRACUSE – The sixth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team used 39 shots and 23 penalty corners to slip by the Dartmouth Big Green, 2-0, this afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Junior forward Kristin Girouard and freshman back Amy Kee provided the goals for the Orange. With its 10th consecutive win SU improved to 13-1, while the Big Green moved to 6-6.
Syracuse owned a 19-3 shot and a 12-1 penalty corner advantage in the first half, but could not find the back of the cage until 34:47 when Girouard put home a ball from junior back Maggie Befort.
The second half was a similar story, with SU outshooting Dartmouth, 20-4. The Orange also racked up 11 penalty corners to the Big Green's zero. Kee provided the insurance goal for Syracuse. The freshman blasted home a penalty corner off a push from Befort and a stop from sophomore midfielder Martina Loncarica at 68:41.
Graduate goalkeeper Ashleigh McGowan made three saves, including a huge diving save in the first half, to record her first career shutout. Meagan Vakiener kept Dartmouth in the game with 21 saves.
SU outshot Dartmouth, 39-7, and held a 23-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The Orange returns to action on Saturday, October 17 when SU travels to Connecticut for a date with the Huskies at noon.
