The Orange tennis team wrapped up its fall schedule at the ITA Northeast Regional Indoor Championship at Yale University over the weekend. The four-day tournament began on Friday, October 23 and featured both doubles and singles play.
“Competing in the ITA Northeast Regional this past weekend was a great opportunity for the team,” assistant coach Shelley George said. “We competed against the top players from every team in the Northeast. We were able to get many wins in both singles and doubles, which was a great way to round up the fall schedule.”
Sophomore Emily Harman and junior Christina Tan turned in a winning performance for the Orange in double play. The pair defeated BIG EAST foes Emily Herb and Lauren Wilmarth from Connecticut, 8-3, before besting Princeton challengers Sarah Hoffman and Melissa Saiontz, 8-4, to advance to the round of 16. Eventual open doubles champions Vicky Brook and Stephanie Kent of Yale ended Harman and Tan's run, 8-5.
Junior Simone Kalhorn and freshman CC Sardinha also teamed up in doubles play defeating the duo of Tamara Markovic and Adi Petrova of Buffalo in a marathon first-round match. The two teams battled back and forth through 16 games to an 8-8 deadlock, forcing a tiebreaker. Syracuse outlasted its challengers, securing a 9-8 victory with an 11-9 win in the deciding set. Kalhorn and Sardinha advanced to the round of 32 before falling to Dartmouth's Molly Scott and Mary Beth Winingham, 8-4.
Sardinha represented the Orange in main open singles action, defeating Princeton's Rachel Saiontz, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5) in the opening round before falling to Yale's Jessie Rhee, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3, in the round of 16.
Kalhorn and Tan both competed in back draw singles action, with Kalhorn going an undefeated 4-0 and defeating her teammate to claim the title.
Syracuse is set to open its spring schedule on Friday, January 29, 2010 when it hosts in-state foe Albany at 2 p.m. at the Drumlins Tennis Center.
