SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The #10/9 Orange (6-0) puts its six-game winning streak on the line Monday, Nov. 30 when it hosts Colgate (0-5) at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game will be broadcast online on ESPN360.com or fans can listen to the action via the Syracuse ISP Sports Network and its flagship station TK 99 (99.5 FM). ABOUT THE ORANGE
Syracuse remained unbeaten with an 85-60 thrashing of Columbia on Nov. 27 in front of season-best crowd of 20,166 fans at the Carrier Dome. The Orange put on another impressive offensive display against the Lions, shooting 52.6 percent (30-57) for the game, including nine 3-pointers.
For the season, Syracuse has connected on 53.7 percent of its shots (195-363) and 40.5 percent (51-126) of its 3-point tries.
Junior forward Wes Johnson led the way with a career-best 26 points in 28 minutes against Columbia. The performance upped Johnson's team-leading scoring average to 18.3 points per contest. He leads a deep Orange roster that boasts seven players that are averaging better than eight points a game. Johnson is also the team's top rebounder at 7.2 boards per contest.
Syracuse is averaging 88.3 points per game and with that many baskets being tallied, the Orange is averaging 21.0 assists per game. The two-headed point guard monster of freshman Brandon Triche (10.7 ppg) and redshirt sophomore Scoop Jardine (9.7 ppg) have combined for better than 20 points per game and 10 assists an outing.
Senior Andy Rautins leads the Orange's long-range shooting attack with 18 threes. Rautins has made 50 percent of his 3-point field-goal attempts (18-36). In addition, Johnson is 13-for-25 (.520) from behind the 3-point arc.
BOEHEIM PASSES SUTTON
Syracuse's win against Columbia was No. 805 for Orange head coach Jim Boeheim. He passed legendary Kentucky and Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton (704 wins) for seventh on the Division I all-time victories list. Ironically on the same night, the other two active members of the 800-win club (Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Connecticut's Jim Calhoun) squared off at Madison Square Garden in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off. It was the first time two coaches with at least 800 wins opposed one another on the hardwood.
SECOND-HALF SURGES
Whatever Boeheim has been saying to his charges at halftime has been working. Syracuse's last three games have been relatively close at intermission, but the Orange has exploded out of the locker room each time to seize control and put the game out of reach.
Against North Carolina on Nov. 20, the Orange trailed by two at the break before scoring 22 of first 23 points in the second half to open up an insurmountable lead.
Four days later against Cornell, the Orange led 42-36 at halftime and used a 21-7 run at the start of the second period to build a comfortable 20-point advantage.
The trend continued Friday versus Columbia as the Orange utilized a 19-3 scoring spurt at the start of the second 20 minutes to break open a 37-26 game.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate is still searching for its first win, having lost five games to start the 2009-10 season. The Raiders nearly secured a victory in its home opener on Nov. 28. Colgate led St. Francis, 36-27, at halftime, but Ricky Cadell hit a long jumper with no time left to lift the Terriers to a 66-65 victory. St. Francis outscored the Raiders, 39-29, in the second period and overcame a 16-point deficit to earn the win.
Senior Kyle Roemer (18.4 ppg) and sophomore Yaw Gyawu (15.8 ppg) are Colgate's two top scorers. They have combined to lead the team in scoring in four of the team's five games. Gyawu has two 20-point performances on his resume this season, including 22 in the St. Francis loss.
Rebounding has been an issue for the Raiders. They don't have anyone on the roster averaging five rebounds a game. Roemer and classmate Ben Jonson are tied for the team lead at 4.4 boards per game.
Emmett Davis is the winningest head coach in Colgate history with 148 victories. Davis is in his 12th season with the Raiders. Colgate finished 10-20 overall last season.
THE SERIES
Syracuse owns a 116-45 advantage in the all-time series and has won the last 43 meetings dating back to 1962. The Orange is 72-18 against the Raiders in games contested in Syracuse, including an 86-51 decision last December.
