WASHINGTON D.C. – Senior Katie Rowan moved up a spot on the NCAA Division I scoring list and junior Christina Dove became the second all-time leading goal scorer in program history in the Orange's 16-10 setback to Notre Dame in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on Friday, April 24. It is Syracuse's first loss in the conference tournament after winning the 2007 and 2008 titles.
Rowan scored two goals and dished out four assists to increase her career point total to 374. She climbed past Virginia's Amy Appelt (2002-05) to No. 6 on the NCAA all-time scoring list. Rowan trails Temple's Gail Cummings (1984-88) by four points for fifth place. Dove netted two goals to take over second place on Syracuse's career goals scored list. She has scored 172 goals in her career, bettering Leigh-Ann Zimmer's (2001-04) mark of 171.
Rowan and Dove combined for seven points in a back-and-forth first 30 minutes of action. Two straight goals from Jillian Byers gave Notre Dame (13-4) its largest lead of the half at 9-6 with 9:05 remaining. The Orange (12-4) scored the final two goals of the half, both on assists from sophomore Tee Ladouceur. First she found senior Bridget Looney cutting in front of the cage, who scored her second goal of the game. Ladouceur then connected with senior Megan Mosenson for the final goal of the half to cut the lead to one, 9-8, at halftime.
Notre Dame took control of the game in the first seven minutes of the second half. Kailene Abt recorded her third goal of the game 48 seconds into the half, which started the Fighting Irish on a 6-0 scoring run that gave it a 14-8 lead with 23:52 left on the clock. Rowan halted the run with an unassisted goal at the 20:35 mark to cut the lead to 14-9. That was as close the Orange would get as Notre Dame went on to a 16-10 victory.
“In the second half, it was a lack of focus and concentration,” said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. “We made simple mistakes. We came up with a couple of draw controls and then we immediately turned it over. It helped Notre Dame start its scoring run.”
Dove and Mosenson each finished with three points on two goals and an assist, while Looney and senior Awehiyo Thomas had two goals apiece. Byers led Notre Dame with seven points on four goals and three assists.
The Fighting Irish outshot the Orange, 28-20, and picked up 21 ground balls to 10 for Syracuse. Orange goalkeeper Liz Hogan made seven saves, as did Notre Dame's Erin Goodman.
Syracuse plays its final regular-season game on Tuesday at Dartmouth at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WJPZ 89.1FM in the Syracuse area and on Orange All Access on SUathletics.com.
