BOSTON – The No. 10 Syracuse University men's rowing team won three of the four races including the varsity eight against No. 7 Columbia and No. 11 Boston University today in the waters of the Charles River in Boston, Mass. The win in the varsity eight gave the Orange the Conlan Cup for the fourth consecutive year. SU has won 13 of its last 14 cup contests dating back to the 2006 season. The Orange is also 24-2 in dual races since 2006.
The varsity eight crossed the finish line in 6:04.7. BU was second at 6:06.2 and Columbia was third at 6:14.1. The Orange won its fourth consecutive Conlan Cup championship against the Terriers. Though the Orange was also racing Columbia, the Conlan Cup is a competition solely between BU and SU. Since its inception in 1987, the Orange has won 13 Conlan Cup races.
“I think Cornell was kind enough last week to show us some of our shortcomings and we did a good job of refocusing and working on those,” said head coach Dave Reischman. “We got out to about a two-seat lead in the first 500 and extended that to about a four-seat advantage at the 1,000. BU threw two good pushes at us, but we did not panic and were able to handle both.”
The Syracuse varsity four also won its race, finishing with a time of 7:11.3. SU beat two Harvard and two Boston University crews to earn the victory.
The freshman eight was the third Orange crew to win its race, crossing the line in 6:28.6. BU was second at 6:42.2. Columbia (6:48.6) and the Syracuse second freshman eight (6:49.6) rounded out the field.
SU's second varsity eight finished second with a time of 6:23.5. Boston University won the race with a time of 6:17.6 and Columbia finished third with a time of 6:37.5.
The Orange must now prepare for the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 10 in Worcester, Mass.
