Orange Head to Lake Morey Invite This Weekend

The Syracuse men's rowing team will travel to Fairlee, Vt., this weekend for the Lake Morey Invite, taking on three ranked opponents over two days of racing on Lake Morey. The ninth-ranked Orange will race for two storied trophies on Saturday before closing out the weekend against No. 19 Georgetown on Sunday morning.

Saturday's action begins with the annual Packard Cup against No. 7 Dartmouth. Commissioned by Anthony Ladd in 1959 to honor his father-in-law, Edward N. Packard — a member of the Syracuse Class of 1906 and the stroke of the 1904 varsity eight that captured SU's first IRA championship — the sterling silver trophy has been contested annually since 1960. Syracuse claimed the cup in each of the first nine editions and has maintained a strong all-time edge in the series, though Dartmouth dominated the rivalry through much of the 1990s and early 2000s. The Orange reclaimed the cup in 2023 and 2024 before the Big Green took it back last spring, making Saturday's matchup a chance for Syracuse to reclaim the trophy against the highest-ranked program in the weekend's field.

Saturday's afternoon race brings another trophy opportunity, as the Orange face No. 12 Boston University in the annual Conlan Cup. Named in honor of Bill Conlan, the founder of the BU rowing program, the cup has been contested nearly every year since 1987 — with the exception of 1996 and two years lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. Syracuse holds a 16-14 all-time edge in the 30 contested editions and has claimed the cup in each of the last four seasons, from 2022 through 2025, entering Saturday's race with both a ranking advantage and a streak worth protecting.

The Orange will close out the weekend on Sunday morning against No. 19 Georgetown. Syracuse enters the matchup with a 10-spot ranking advantage over the Hoyas in the varsity eight poll and will look to carry the momentum of Saturday's trophy races into a strong finish at the Lake Morey Invite.
