Former Syracuse point guard Jonny Flynn has been named the National Basketball Association's "Rookie of the Month."
Flynn, a first-round choice of the Minnesota Timberwolves, was the sixth overall selection in June's NBA draft. He recently completed a week of play in the NBA Summer League. In five games, he averaged 15.0 points, 7.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds. He had 24 points in one outing and 21 in another for the T-Wolves. Flynn's assist average ranked third among competitors in the week of competition.
Paul Harris, a teammate of Flynn's at Niagara Falls High School and Syracuse, averaged 4.5 points and 2.0 rebounds a game for the Minnesota summer-league entry.
A handful of other performers with Syracuse ties all participated in the NBA's Summer League. Donte Greene, who just completed his first NBA season with the Sacramento Kings, averaged 7.6 points and 5.8 boards per outing. Demestris Nichols (3.8 ppg., 3.0 rpg.) was with Toronto's club. Darryl Watkins (2.6 ppg., 1.2 rpg.), who was a classmate of Nichols' at Syracuse, was a member of Houston's squad.
