LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Freshman back Amy Kee scored the game-winning goal 14:43 into overtime as the seventh-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team recorded a 2-1 victory versus the University of Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
After 40 minutes of scoreless hockey and a 1-1 tie Kee took a pass from sophomore back Martina Loncarica off a penalty corner and found the back of the cage to give the Orange its fourth dramatic overtime win.
“Amy Kee and Maggie Befort really stepped up and competed today,” head coach Ange Bradley said. “We were fortunate to get the result we wanted.”
Junior back Maggie Befort gave Syracuse an early 1-0 advantage, scoring off a rebound created by a shot from sophomore forward Heather Susek 15 minutes into the contest.
The Wolverines tied the score at 1-1 at the 25:53 mark when Vanessa Sekhon scored off a pass from Alicia Mayer.
Neither team could find the back of the cage for the rest of the game until Kee's heroic goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Leann Stiver recorded four saves in her first complete game for the Orange. Paige Pickett registered six saves for Michigan.
Syracuse held a 13-9 advantage in shots and a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners.
The Orange begins a six-game homestand on Saturday, September 26 when it plays hosts Providence in a BIG EAST Conference game at noon.
