SYRACUSE – Junior forward Kristin Girouard and senior forward Tracy Deitrick both scored first-half goals as the sixth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team defeated No. 19 Providence, 2-1, in BIG EAST Conference action this afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. With the win, the Orange improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the league, while the Friars moved to 3-5, 0-2.
SU dominated the first 35 minutes of play, outshooting PC, 13-2. Girouard gave Syracuse a 1-0 lead 17:10 into the contest by deflecting a hit from junior forward Lindsey Conrad. It was Girouard's second goal of the season and Conrad's first assist.
“It was a game of two halves,” head coach Ange Bradley said. “We played very well during the game's first 35 minutes and were able to fight through the second 35 minutes to get the result we wanted.”
Conrad provided the opportunity on SU's second goal sending a ball off Deitrick's stick for the game winner at 29:03. It was Deitrick's first goal of the year.
Providence closed the margin to 2-1 at 44:31 when Ashlyn Hudson's blast from the top of the circle found the back of the cage. The two teams traded opportunities in the game's final 25 minutes, but in the end the Orange was just too much.
Freshman goalkeeper Leann Stiver recorded three saves in the victory. Rachel Chamberlain registered four for the Friars. Syracuse outshot Providence, 18-5, and held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners.
SU returns to action tomorrow as the Orange host Columbia at 1 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Live video will be available on Orange All Access and live stats can be seen on SUAthletics.com.
