A LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse was picked to finished third in the BIG EAST Conference in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches. The Orange returns two starters in Rick Jackson and Brandon Triche as well as 2010 BIG EAST Sixth Man of the Year honoree Kris Joseph.
Jackson earned Preseason All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention accolades last week. Last season he started all 35 games and led the team with 69 blocked shots. Jackson averaged 9.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, both career highs.
Joseph was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team after averaging 10.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game a year ago. He came off the bench for the majority of the season before an injury to Arinze Onuaku forced him into the starting lineup. He scored in double figures in 20 contests and posted two double-doubles.
Triche was voted to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team and was named a Freshman All-American by collegeinsider.com last season after starting every game. He averaged 8.1 points and 2.83 assists per game. One of his most memorable performances came against Oakland when he went 6-for-6 from three-point range on his way to a career-high 27 points.
Scoop Jardine is another experienced player for the Orange. Jardine earned the Sporting News' Sixth Man of the Year award last season when led Syracuse in assists with a career-high 151. He also averaged 9.1 points per game.
Fans will get their first look at the Orange's highly-touted freshmen class, which includes Fab Melo, the Preseason BIG EAST Rookie of the Year. Fellow freshmen Dion Waiters, #C.J. Fair and Baye Moussa Keita# will also make their Carrier Dome debuts.
Head coach Jim Boeheim begins his 35th season at his alma mater. After guiding the Orange to a 30-5 record last season, he was honored as coach of the year by the Associated Press, FoxSports.com, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Sporting News, the United States Basketball Writers Association, Yahoo!Sports and the Atlanta Tipoff Club (Naismith Award).
Boeheim enters this season with an overall record of 829-293 (.739). He is one of only three active coaches and the eighth overall in Division I to record 800 career victories.
SCOUTING KUTZTOWN
Tuesday's game is the only exhibition game for Kutztown before it opens the season against Philadelphia University on November 13. The Golden Bears face the task of replacing Stephen Dennis, the Division II National Player of the Year last season. Kutztown returns two starters from a team that finished 23-8 overall and participated in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region tournament.
Senior guard Julius Gray and Eric Brennan, a transfer from Lock Haven, were named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East preseason team. Gray is Kutztown's top returning scorer after averaging 13.8 points per game. He scored in double figures 23 times in 2009-10 and scored 20 or more points eight times. Brennan averaged 17.5 points per game last season and recorded 40 steals. He scored 20 or more points in seven games and posted seven double-doubles.
