SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior guard Erica Morrow netted a game-best 27 points to lead -/rv Syracuse (8-0) to a 75-66 win against 6/6 Ohio State (7-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. It was the first home win against a ranked opponent for the Orange since it defeated 8/7 West Virginia, 67-48, last season. It marked the 36th consecutive non-conference home victory for SU, which improves to 8-0 for the second-consecutive season.
Morrow was 10-of-18 from the floor including a season-best four three pointers. With the season-best performance, Morrow moved into fourth all-time on the Syracuse scoring charts, passing Martha Mogish with 1,415 career points. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native also lead the squad with four assists while adding five rebounds. Junior forward Iasia Hemingway was second on the team with 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds while sophomore forward Carmen Tyson-Thomas added nine points and seven boards.
Sophomore center Kayla Alexander and redshirt freshman Shakeya Leary controlled the paint for the Orange, helping the squad to a +10.0 rebounding margin (43-33) on the day. Alexander netted six points and pulled in seven rebounds while Leary paired six points with six boards.
The Buckeyes opened the scoring with five unanswered and took its largest lead of the game, 20-10, with 8:59 remaining in the first half. Syracuse found its rhythm through the final 6:44 of the first half as Leary hit a turnaround jumper sparking a 16-0 run. Sophomore forward Elashier Hall propelled the run with six points of her eight points on the day from behind the arc while Leary and Morrow each netted three. The Orange outscored the Buckeyes, 21-4, through remainder of the opening half to go into the intermission with a 35-28 lead.
The teams traded baskets out of the break with Syracuse taking a nine-point lead – its largest of the contest – on a Morrow layup. Ohio State assembled a 14-6 run to pull back within even, tying the game at 56 with 8:34 remaining in regulation. The Orange recreated the separation with five unanswered, 61-56, but OSU's Lavender answered with a trio of inside field goals to close the gap to one, 63-62, with 5:32 left to play. Tyson-Thomas connected from three-point range, re-establishing the buffer, 66-62, with 5:13 to play and the Orange outscored the Buckeyes, 9-2, through the remainder of regulation to seal the 75-66 win.
After completing its eight-game season-opening home stand, Syracuse hits the road to face 2/3 Baylor in the Bahamas Sunsplash Shootout on Dec. 21 at 8:15 p.m.
