NASSAU, Bahamas - 2/2 Baylor (12-1) handed 23/rv Syracuse (8-1) its first loss of the season, 77-43, in the opening round of the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout on Tuesday night at Kendall Issacs Gym. Despite the loss, the Orange owned a 46-40 advantage on the boards, with 11 different players contributing to the rebounding effort.
“They have a lot of balance,” head coach Quentin Hillsman said of Baylor. “In the first half we really wanted to pack the paint in and one of their shooters had 22 points, in the second half we moved out and they scored in the paint. I asked to come here and asked to play Baylor. This was a good experience for our team and a good experience for me. This is why we play these games because this is where we want to be, we want to be one of the top teams in the country.”
Junior forward Iasia Hemingway led the Orange with 10 points and six rebounds while senior guard Erica Morrow added seven points. Sophomore forward Elashier Hall propelled the rebounding effort with seven boards and added six points while junior forward Troya Berry paired five points with four rebounds. Sophomore forward Carmen Tyson-Thomas added six rebounds while senior guard Tasha Harris directed the offense with four assists.
Harris found Hall to open the scoring just five seconds into the contest, but Bears responded with a 20-0 run to take a 20-2 lead with 10:58 to play in the first half. The teams traded baskets, 18-13, through the remainder of the first half to head into the break with Baylor ahead, 38-15.
The Orange zone stifled the Bears inside presence in the first half, winning the rebounding battle while limiting Baylor leading scorer Brittney Griner to two first-half points.
Syracuse held Baylor without a field goal through the first four minutes of the second half, which proved to be more closely contested than the first. The Orange traded scores with the Bears, 6-7, to make it 45-21, before Baylor assembled a 10-2 run to establish a 55-23 buffer with 12:48 remaining in regulation. The Bears carried their lead throughout the remainder of the contest, earning the 77-43 win.
SU concludes Bahamas Sunshine Shootout action when it faces Clemson tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 8:15 p.m. in Kendall Issacs Gym.
