23/rv Syracuse (9-1) returned to its winning ways with a 77-58 victory against Clemson (6-7) in the final game of the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout on Wednesday night at Kendall Issacs Gym. Sophomore center Kayla Alexander and junior forward Iasia Hemingway both netted double-doubles in the win to earn Bahamas Sunshine Shootout All-Tournament Team accolades.
“I was happy with how we responded,” head coach Quentin Hillsman said. “Sometimes after a game like we had yesterday with Baylor it is hard to respond. Our older kids really responded and played a tough game. I was happy with how they came out and left everything on the floor.”
Alexander led all scorers with 23 points while adding a team-best tying 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Hemingway added a season-best 21 points while corralling 10 boards, helping Syracuse win the rebounding battle, 45-33, and control the paint, 38-28.
Sophomore forward Elashier Hall chipped in a career-best 16 points and five rebounds while classmate Carmen Tyson-Thomas rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points and seven boards. Senior guards Tasha Harris and Erica Morrow directed the offensive effort, dishing out four and three assists, respectively, while helping turn 19 Clemson turnovers into 24 points.
Syracuse opened the scoring with six unanswered before Clemson founds its rhythm with a 15-0 run to make it 15-6 with 15:40 remaining in the first half. Hall and Hemingway assembled the six-point scoring streak for the Orange with Hall netting a trey and Hemingway adding three points with the hoop and harm.
Sparked by nine points from Alexander, the Orange outscored the Tigers, 21-5, through the next eight minutes to recapture the lead, 28-20, with 7:02 left on the clock. SU continued to drive, outscoring Clemson, 16-5 through the remainder of the first half to head into the intermission with a 44-25 lead.
The teams traded baskets through the first nine minutes of the second half with Syracuse building its lead to 24, 58-34, with 10:54 left in regulation. The Orange maintained it lead through the remainder of regulation, cruising to a 77-58 win.
Syracuse heads home from the Bahamas to the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome where it looks to extend its non-conference home winning streak against St. Francis (Pa.) on December 28 at 2 p.m.
