SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Three players netted double-doubles to lead Syracuse (10-1) to a 94-60 win against St. Francis (Pa.) (5-7) in the Carrier Dome on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore center Kayla Alexander, junior forward Iasia Hemingway and sophomore guard Carmen Tyson-Thomas each had double-doubles in the contest, marking the first time three Orange players have accomplished the feat in a game since Feb. 1, 1989.
“Second half we did a better job of getting out on their shooters,” head coach Quentin Hillsman said. “I'm happy to come back off the break to this result and very pleased with Kayla (Alexander) and Iasia (Hemingway). We had 30 assists which is a big number we haven't seen on that board in a long time and had 60 points in the paint which is huge.”
Syracuse was dominant in all facets of the game, shooting 55.9 percent from the floor while dominating the lane with a 48-26 advantage in rebounds and a 60-14 edge in the paint. Hemingway led all scorers with a career-high tying 22 points and 10 rebounds while dishing out four assists. Alexander added 20 points and a game-best 11 rebounds while adding three blocked shots and Tyson-Thomas netted her sixth career double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Freshman guard La'Shay Taft and sophomore forward Elashier Hall rounded out the double-digit scorers. Taft had 11 points, knocking down 3-of-5 from three-point range while adding a pair of free throws and Hall added 10 points and four rebounds.
Senior guards Tasha Harris and Erica Morrow directed the high-powered offense, combining for 17 of SU's program-best tying 30 assists. Harris dished out 10 helpers while Morrow had seven to go along with her seven points.
The teams traded baskets through the opening five minutes before Morrow netted five points in a 12-0 run which gave the Orange a 21-7 edge with 11:56 to play in the first half. After a St. Francis field goal, SU added another eight unanswered to take its largest lead of the half, 29-9, with 6:30 left on the clock.
The Red Flash cut the deficit, outscoring the Orange, 11-2, through the next three minutes to make it 31-20 with SU maintaining its 11-point advantage, 36-25, at halftime.
Syracuse reestablished its lead out of the locker room, opening the second half with an 11-2 run through the first three minutes to go up 45-27 with 17:39 remaining in regulation. The Orange broke the game open with a 30-12 run, bumping its lead to 32, 87-55, with 4:19 left on the clock. Alexander propelled the run with 10 points while Tyson-Thomas had eight and Hemingway added six.
The Orange maintained its buffer through the remainder of regulation, cruising to a 94-60 win and marking the most points scored by the SU offense this season.
After a quick turnaround Syracuse returns to Jim Boeheim Court in the Carrier Dome on Thursday, December 30 when it hosts Bryant at 12 p.m.
