NEW YORK -- Senior Rick Jackson tied his season high with 17 points to go along with 16 rebounds to lead 7/8 Syracuse to a 72-58 victory against 8/7 Michigan State on Tuesday, December 7. The game was part of the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. The Orange improves to 9-0, while Michigan State goes to 6-3.
Jackson posted his seventh double-double of the season and 14th of his career in the win. He was one of three Syracuse players to reach double figures in scoring. Junior Scoop Jardine led all scorers with 19 points, while junior Kris Joseph added 14 points. Durrell Summers topped Michigan State with 18 points.
After Syracuse scored its first five points from the free throw line, Korie Lucious hit a three-pointer to put the Spartans up 8-5. Back-to-back baskets by Jackson and Baye Moussa Keita gave the Orange its first lead of the game at 9-8, but Michigan State quickly regained the lead on Lucious' layup. Jackson put the Orange back on top with a layup at the 15:25 mark, sparking Syracuse on a 14-3 scoring run that gave SU its largest lead of the first half at 25-13 with 9:20 remaining. Jackson and freshman #C.J. Fair# had six points each during the run. Michigan State scored six consecutive points to cut the lead to 27-23, but Jardine and Joseph combined for Syracuse's final 11 points of the half, helping the Orange to a 38-29 halftime lead.
Jackson and Joseph teamed for Syracuse's first eight points of the second half as the Orange regained a 12-point advantage, 46-34, at the 17:21 mark. But the Spartans wouldn't go away, putting together a 7-0 scoring run that cut SU's lead to 46-41. Sophomore Brandon Triche halted the run with a basket, but five straight points by Michigan State brought the Spartans to within two at 48-46 with 13:16 remaining. That was as close as Michigan State would get. Syracuse took control of the game with an 8-1 scoring run that increased its lead to 56-47 with 8:58 on the clock. From there it was all Orange. Syracuse held Michigan State to just five points during the next six-and-a-half minutes, and, with 2:40 remaining, Jardine's layup on an assist from Triche gave Syracuse its largest lead of the game of 16.
Triche finished with nine points, while Keita tied his career high with three blocked shots. Syracuse shot 75.9 percent (22-of-29) from the free-throw line, which is a season high.
