SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- No. 6 Syracuse jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first six goals of the game, on its way to a 16-7 victory against No. 12 Stanford on Sunday, Feb. 21 in the Carrier Dome. The Orange improves to 2-0 on the season, while Stanford goes to 1-1.
“When we came out, we executed and everything seemed to work,” said head coach Gary Gait. “That's what you always hope for. It's a good start to the season. We have lots to work on. We're always looking to execute better offensively and defensively, be a little more consistent on our transitions. Overall, it was a great weekend and we're ready to move forward and look at Virginia.”
Senior Christina Dove led a balanced scoring attack as six different players scored for the Orange. Dove led the way with five goals, giving her 190 in her career, and extended her streak of consecutive games with a goal to 42.
Syracuse started the scoring two minutes into the contest when freshman Tegan Brown found the back of the net off an assist from senior Halley Quillinan. Quillinan increased the Orange lead to 2-0 with her fourth goal of the season before senior Jackie DePetris and Dove each scored back-to-back goals to give SU a 6-0 advantage with 21:49 on the clock. Lauren Schmidt notched Stanford's first goal at the 17:51 mark, but Syracuse outscored the Cardinal, 5-1, during the remainder of the half and took an 11-2 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Dove led the Orange in the first half with four goals.
Freshman Michelle Tumolo and senior Tee Ladouceur connected for Syracuse's first two goals of the second half. Tumolo scored on a behind-the-back shot after taking a pass from Ladouceur for her first goal of the game. Tumolo then returned the favor, assisting on Ladouceur's goal to give SU a 13-2 lead. After a Stanford goal, Dove and Ladouceur recorded unassisted goals to give Syracuse its largest lead of the game, 15-3, with 17:33 remaining. The Cardinal recorded four consecutive goals to cut the lead to eight, but that was as close as it could get. Quillinan scored the final goal of the game on an assist from Tumolo with 1:07 remaining for the 16-7 final.
Ladouceur tied her career high with seven points on four goals and three assists, while Tumolo finished with a goal and a team-best four assists. DePetris had a hat trick with three goals, and Quillinan scored two goals and recorded one assist. Leslie Foard led Stanford with two goals and one assist.
Syracuse outshot Stanford, 41-20, and won 20-of-25 draw controls. Stanford held a 17-16 advantage in ground balls and had 15 turnovers to 16 for the Orange. Annie Read recorded 20 saves for Stanford, while junior Liz Hogan made seven saves for the Orange.
The Orange goes on the road for the first time this season next Saturday when it faces No.10 Virginia in Charlottesville.
