Providence Awaits #4/4 Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - #4/4 Syracuse (25-2, 12-2) will travel to Providence on Tuesday, Feb. 23 for the second game of a home-and-home series with the Friars (12-14, 4-10). Tip-off is 7 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Orange won the season's first pairing (85-68) on Feb. 2 at the Carrier Dome.
The game will be televised lived on ESPNU. Fans can listen to the action via the Syracuse ISP Radio Network and its flagship TK 99 (99.5 FM). The audio stream of the radio broadcast will be available on SUathletics.com as part of Orange All-Access.
LAST TIME OUT
Syracuse is coming off a 75-71 win at No. 10 Georgetown on Feb. 18. The Orange swept the season series against the Hoyas with the victory and improved its record against nationally-ranked clubs to 6-0.
Syracuse dominated the game early and led by as many as 23 with less than eight minutes remaining. The visitors survived a furious Georgetown rally to emerge victorious.
Free-throw shooting keyed the win as Syracuse connected on 27-of-30 (.900) charity shots in the contest. The Orange also hit eight 3-pointers.
Senior Andy Rautins tallied a game-high 26 points. He made a career-best nine free-throws in the contest. He also hit five 3-pointers to move into second place on SU's career list for made three's (251) and hauled in seven rebounds. Junior Wes Johnson scored 16 points, including 14 in the first half. He was 8-for-8 from the foul line and contributed five blocked shots.
ROAD WARRIORS
Syracuse is 10-0 away from the Carrier Dome this season. The team is 7-0 in true road contests and 3-0 in neutral-site affairs. The last time the Orange did not lose a road game in the regular season was in 1917-18. Head coach Edmund Dollard guided the squad to a 16-1 record that year and the Helms Foundation retroactively named the team its national champion.
Following its game against Providence, the Orange will play one more regular-season road game, at Louisville on March 6 in what will be the final game at Freedom Hall.
ORANGE CLINCHES BIG EAST TOURNAMENT BYE
Syracuse and Villanova have already clinched first-round byes for the upcoming BIG EAST Championship at Madison Square Garden. The Orange is currently in first place in the league standings with a 12-2 mark. The Wildcats are in second place at 11-3.
RAUTINS JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB
Rautins' 26 points at Georgetown increased his career point total to an even 1,000. He is the 53rd player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He is 31 points behind his father, Leo, on Syracuse's career scoring list. The elder Rautins scored 1,031 points from 1980-83. They are the first father-son combination in Orange history to both record at least 1,000 points.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
Providence enters Tuesday's game with a 1-8 record in the last nine games. In their last outing, the Friars were dealt an 88-74 loss by West Virginia.
The Friars have three players in double figures and are led by sophomore forward Jamine Peterson at 18.9 points per game. Peterson leads the BIG EAST in double-doubles with 14 on the season. He had game-best 25 points and 11 rebounds in the first meeting.
Senior Sharaud Curry (15.2 ppg) and Marshon Brooks (14.0 ppg) round out Providence's double-figure scorers.
The Friars are second in the BIG EAST in scoring (81.5 ppg) and lead the league in rebounding (40.7 rpg).
THE SERIES
The Orange holds a 42-10 advantage in the all-time series. Syracuse has a 20-6 record in games played in Providence, but suffered a 100-94 loss when it visited the Friars last season. The Orange has won eight of the last 10 pairings overall.
