SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse tennis team hopes to remain unbeaten against New York State opponents as it hosts a duo of in-state foes this weekend. The Orange squad is currently 6-0 against teams hailing from the Empire State and the streak will be put on the line Thursday, when the team hosts Colgate, and Friday, when they take on Binghamton at home.
The list of New York State teams to fall prey to the Orange grew on Tuesday afternoon, when the squad beat Cornell, 5-2, in Ithaca. Before taking down the Big Red, the team had beaten Albany (7-0), St. John's (6-1), Columbia (4-3), Niagara (7-0), and Buffalo (4-3). Syracuse is currently on a five-match win streak and remains perfect at home.
Strength can be found everywhere on Syracuse's roster, as each one of the players in the top six positions have winning singles records. Senior transfer Eleanor Peters has been dominant in singles, posting a 13-1 record and holding steady at the No. 3 spot. Freshman CC Sardinha has compiled an impressive 10-4 record while moving her way up to the No. 1 spot. Joining Sardinha with a 10-4 record are junior Simone Kalhorn and sophomore Alessondra Parra. Sophomore Emily Harman has also been strong at both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots and compiling a 9-5 record. Junior Christina Tan has been holding down the No. 6 spot with some strong play and a 7-6 record on the season.
Doubles has also been a strong suit for the Orange this season. The tandem of Harman and Jones has a 5-3 record, while Kalhorn and Peters have teamed up for five victories and one loss. The pairings of Harman and Tan and Parra and Peters have racked up records of 4-1 apiece. The Syracuse squad has won the doubles point in all but three of their matches this season.
The Orange will take the court on Thursday, March 11 at 4 p.m. to take on Colgate and on Friday, March 12 at 3 p.m. to face Binghamton. Both matches will be hosted at the Drumlin's Tennis Center. Check SUAthletics.com for all results.
