SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse tennis team held on just long enough to beat Binghamton, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Drumlins Tennis Center. Sophomore Alessondra Parra defeated Binghamton's Yulia Smirnova at the No. 3 singles spot to clinch the final point and seal Syracuse's 13th victory of the season.
Parra went 7-5 and 6-0 in her sets against Smirnova and captured her 12th singles victory of the season. Also scoring points for the Orange in singles were junior captain Christina Tan at the No. 5 spot and senior Chelsea Jones at the No. 6 position. Tan defeated Binghamton's Marina Bykovskaya with set scores of 6-1 and 6-2, while Jones bested Yagmur Gone with scores of 6-4 and 6-1.
It was a tough day at the top two spots for Syracuse, as the Orange's No. 1 and No. 2 singles players fell to their Binghamton Rivals. Sophomore Emily Harman lost her two sets, 6-3 and 6-2, to the Bearcats' Lauren Bates at the top spot, while senior Eleanor Peters lost out, 6-2 and 6-3, in her sets against Anna Edelman at the No. 2 position. Also running into trouble during the match was junior captain Simone Kalhorn, who was bested by Binghamton's Jillian Santos in their sets at the No. 4 spot.
Doubles action also saw Syracuse's top players being beaten in the No. 1 spot. Harman and Tan teamed up but were unable to match Binghamton's pairing of Edelman and Bykovskaya. They lost in their set with a score of 8-4. However, Syracuse's other two doubles tandems were able to lock up the doubles point. Parra and Peters teamed up to defeat the Binghamton pairing of Bates and Santos, 9-7, while Kalhorn and Jones beat Smirnova and Shaprio, 8-4, in their set.
The victory was Syracuse's seventh in a row and pushes them to 13-2 for the season. So far, the Orange has defeated every foe from the State of New York, compiling a record of 8-0 against in-state teams. Their final Empire State challenger will be Army on March 31st in a rescheduled match from earlier in the season.
Syracuse returns to action on March 27th in a match against BIG EAST foe Providence. The match is the first of four consecutive conference matchups for the Orange, who is a perfect 3-0 in the BIG EAST so far. All four matches will take place on the road and the squad is looking to improve on its 6-2 record when away from the comforts of home.
