SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team has reached a threshold never before seen in Syracuse tennis history. After returning from this weekend's road swing with two victories, the team has set a new record for wins in a single season with 18. The previous record was 16 wins, which happened four times before in the program's 35-year history.
The victories came against two BIG EAST opponents, Georgetown on Friday afternoon and Seton Hall on Saturday morning. Syracuse beat the Hoyas, 6-1, and then dismantled the Pirates, 7-0. The wins also cemented an undefeated conference record for the Orange this season. The team has gone 7-0 against BIG EAST opponents and in dominating fashion, outscoring them 45-4 in dual matches.
Friday's match against Georgetown featured strong play by all members of the Orange squad. Freshman CC Sardinha continued her winning ways at the No. 1 singles spot, beating Georgetown's Victoria Sekely, 6-0, 6-2. Senior Eleanor Peters also found success at the No. 3 spot, beating Samantha Martin in two 6-2 sets. Junior captain Christina Tan had the most convincing win of the day by shutting out Alexandra Landers at the No. 6 singles spot and beating her 6-0 in both sets. The only singles loss of the day came for Emily Harman at the No. 2 spot, where she fell to Lauren Greco, 3-6, 6-3 (12).
Doubles action belonged solely to the Orange, as it took all three matches. The pairing of Harman and Sardinha shut out Georgetown's No. 1 pairing of Alex Sebia and Lauren Greco with a score of 8-0.
The success continued into Saturday, as the Orange won every single match of the day against Seton Hall. Sardinha had no trouble with Denise Liebschner at the No. 1 spot, defeating her with set scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Emily Harman rebounded from her singles loss on Friday to beat Elizabeth Verow, 6-0, 6-2 in their match. Sophomore Alessondra Parra shut out her Seton Hall opponent at the No. 4, while junior captain Simone Kalhorn beat Courtney Kilorski at the No. 5 spot, 6-0, 7-5.
Syracuse dominated doubles competition again, winning every single match. Sardinha and Harman teamed up again at the No. 1 spot and won, 8-2. Peters teamed up with Parra at the No. 2 spot and took down their Seton Hall opponent, 8-3, while the No. 3 match went to the pairing of Kalhorn and senior Chelsea Jones, as they won, 8-1.
The regular season is winding down for the Orange, who is currently on a 12-match winning streak. The team's final regular season match will be on Saturday, April 10th, when Temple comes to the Drumlins Tennis Center for a 10 a.m. match. Check SUAthletics.com for more updates and results.
