HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Orange tennis team continued its success on the summer pro tour, wrapping up the USTA Women's 10K Pro Tour Circuit Tournament at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center on Thursday, June 2.
Eleanor Peters led the Orange competitors throughout the week, advancing to the main draw in both singles and doubles competition. Peters advanced to the final round of singles qualification for the second time in as many events with a dramatic three-set victory on Sunday before winning the 12th match of her pro career on Monday to advance to the main draw.
The Washington, D.C. native continued to roll on Tuesday, turning in her sixth-consecutive pro victory with a two-set singles win, 7-6, 6-3. Peters ended the tournament with a heart-breaking three-set singles loss, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and teamed with rising junior captain Emily Harman for a three-set loss, 7-5, 2-6, (10-3) in doubles play on Thursday.
Peters is now 13-6 in her pro career, which began on May 1, 2010. In just one month the left hander has won 11 out of 12 matches in two sets. Peters is the first touring pro from Syracuse University made in the USA Pro Development Tennis Program. She earned her pre-law degree from Syracuse in 2010 and will play on the pro tour for three years before enrolling in law school.
Rising junior Alessondra Parra was equally successful, reaching the final round of singles qualification with a two-set win, 7-6, 6-4, on Sunday. It marked the fourth time Parra has advanced to the final round of singles qualification after accomplishing the feat three times during the 2009 summer pro season.
Rising senior Jacquelynn Tang dropped a tough three-set decision in singles play on Thursday while teammates Simone Kalhorn and Christina Tan fell in two sets.
The Hilton Head Island Tournament was the sixth professional event of the summer for the Orange, who will play in six more pro tournaments this summer before returning to school.
Next up the team will compete in a 25K event in El Paso, Texas beginning June 6.
