The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has announced that Syracuse University has earned its fifth-straight AVCA Team Academic Award. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA.
Syracuse was one of 94 NCAA Division I women's teams and one of four BIG EAST teams honored by the AVCA. It is the seventh AVCA Team Academic Award for the Orange in head coach Jing Pu's 15-year tenure.
The award contributes to SU volleyball's strong tradition of success in the classroom. Earlier this month, Syracuse earned its third-straight BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award for having the highest GPA among conference teams.
Individually, numerous student-athletes are named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team each school year, amounting to 148 all-time selections through 2008-09. Rising seniors Sarah Hayes, Mindy Stanislovaitis and Hayley Todd have all earned BIG EAST All-Academic honors in each year of their collegiate careers to date. The Orange has also had 22 student-athletes garner ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, with graduated seniors Kacie MacTavish and Sarah Morton being the most recent selections in 2009.
