Soderstrom Joins Volleyball Staff

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse volleyball head coach Jing Pu has added Matthew Soderstrom to his staff as an assistant coach. A native of Rocky Hill, Conn., Soderstrom spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Northeastern University. His five-year assistant coaching career also includes stints at St. John's and Western Connecticut State.
“I am very glad to have Matthew joining our coaching staff,” Pu said. “With Matthew's strong playing background and knowledge recruiting in our region, he enhance the quality of our daily practice, game preparation and recruiting.”
During his two seasons at Northeastern, Soderstrom helped guide the Huskies to a 34-23 overall record and a second-place finish in the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association standings. He also mentored four All-CAA selections, including the 2010 CAA Player of the Year and CAA Freshman of the Year.
Soderstrom spent the 2008 season as an assistant coach on the St. John's staff, where he helped the Red Storm capture the BIG EAST regular-season title while working with three AVCA All-Americans, the BIG EAST Player of the Year and BIG EAST Libero of the Year.
Soderstrom began his collegiate coaching career at Western Connecticut State where he served as an assistant coach for two seasons and has additional coaching experience at both the club and high school levels.
He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut in 2007, where he was a member of the men's club volleyball team and was named a 2006 NECVL All-New England selection. After graduating from Connecticut, he played one season at the University of New Haven where he tallied 184 kills, 34 aces and 70 total blocks, ranking 10th nationally with .44 aces per game.
A native of Rocky Hill, Conn., Soderstrom completed his master's degree in sports leadership at Northeastern in December 2010.
