Following a record setting weekend in wins against Georgetown and Vermont, junior attack Kelsey Millman and senior midfielder Nicole Nelson have been named the BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Millman had a 14-point weekend for the Orange while Nelson led an SU defense that allowed just one goal and seven shots.
Millman scored five goals and added four assists as Syracuse outscored its opponents 23-1 in two wins last weekend. On Friday against BIG EAST foe Georgetown, she broke the school record with 10 points, tied a SU record for goals in a game with four and added two assists en route to an 11-1 win against the Hoyas.
On Sunday against Vermont, she scored her fifth goal of the weekend and dished out two assists in a 12-0 win. The Center Valley, Pa. native is first in the conference in points (41), points per game (2.73), assists (13), assists per game (0.87), game-winning goals (4) and second in goals (14) and goals per game (0.93).
Millman leads the Orange with 41 points off 14 goals and a team-best 13 assists, and was tied for 25th in the nation in points per game entering last week's games.
Nelson (Telford, Pa.) has one goal for the Orange this season. During SU's 10-game winning streak, Nelson and the Syracuse defense have limited its opponents to 3.2 shots per game and just seven goals, including five shutouts. Against the Hoyas, SU allowed only two shots on goal while holding the Catamounts without a single shot on goal on Sunday.
SU, which clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament for the fifth straight season, will hit the road for two tough games against nationally ranked opponents this weekend. The Orange will take on No. 11 Boston College in Chestnut Hill on Friday (7:00 p.m.) before a BIG EAST matchup on Sunday with No. 4 Connecticut (12:00 p.m.).
