STORRS, Conn. – Marie Elena Bolles' double overtime goal lifted No. 4 UConn to a 3-2 victory against the No. 6 Syracuse field hockey team on Sunday. Iona Holloway and Kelsey Millman each scored goals for the Orange (14-3, 4-1), while Leean Stiver made four saves.
The loss snaps the Orange's 11-game winning streak, which dated back to September 16 against Rutgers. Connecticut narrowly outshot SU 10-7, while the Orange generated five penalty corners during the game.
Both teams battled for positioning throughout the game as both teams were assessed two green cards apiece, while the Orange played down a player for five minutes after Lauren Brooks was whistled for a green card in the 61st minute.
Connecticut opened the scoring in the 15th minute of play as the Huskies were awarded a penalty corner. Cara Silverman, stationed in front of the cage, was able to deflect a shot from Jestine Angelini past Stiver for Silverman's first of the season.
The score would remain that way until early in the second half when the Orange made it 1-1 off a penalty corner of its own. Amy Kee, who received the ball after a stop from Martina Loncarica, blasted a shot towards goal that Holloway redirected into the back of the cage for her third goal of the season.
Two minutes later, SU took its first lead of the game as Milman scored her 16th goal of the year. Brooks controlled the ball before dishing to Millman, who then shot the ball inside the near post for the score.
UConn tied the score once again with 21:23 remaining in regulation on Anne Jeute redirection from Angelini during a corner.
After playing to a scoreless first overtime, which included two Orange penalty corner and a huge stop from Stiver on a breakaway by Jeute, the teams headed to a sudden-victory double overtime, where Bolles gave UConn the 3-2 win two minutes into the extra session off a long ball that was poked past Stiver.
SU will conclude its three-game road next Friday at Villanova before returning to J.S. Coyne Stadium on Sunday against Bucknell in the final game of the regular season.
