Shannon Taylor At The Pan American Games

Former Syracuse field hockey great Shannon Taylor is currently in action with Team USA at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Taylor has two goals in the tournament as the United States is set to face Canada this afternoon in the semifinals (3:00 p.m.). The Pan American Games are held every four years and represent the first chance to qualify for the Olympic Games.
Entering today's semifinal action, the United States holds a 3-0 record after completing pool play with wins against Mexico, Chile and Cuba. Taylor scored her first goal of the tournament in Team USA's 5-0 shutout victory against host nation Mexico on October 19 in the 31st minute to give the red, white and blue a 3-0 edge at the time.
In a tight contest against Chile which saw the Americans walk away with a 2-1 win, Taylor netted her second goal in the 41st minute. The United States then closed pool play with a dominating 9-0 win against Cuba to earn a spot in the semifinals.
A first-team 2008 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I and womensfieldhockey.com All-America, Taylor was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and the ECAC All-Star squad during her time with the Orange. A Honda Collegiate Women Sports Award finalist for field hockey, she was also the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player and a member of the All-BIG EAST Tournament Team.
Taylor made a huge impact with the Orange in 2008. Taylor was the statistical champion for points per game (3.29) and goals per game (1.29). Her 79 points and 31 goals are both Orange single-season records. Her point total ties for eighth (Jodi Carter, 1992-95) on SU's career list and her 14 assists rank third on Syracuse's single-season list. Taylor's points and goals are both Syracuse senior records. Taylor was also named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team.
The Orange conclude BIG EAST play this weekend on the road at Villanova on Friday beginning at 4:00 p.m. SU will then return to J.S. Coyne Stadium on Sunday for Senior Day against Bucknell at 2:00 p.m.
