SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The United States, led by former Syracuse field hockey great Shannon Taylor, captured the gold medal in the women's final at the 2011 Pan American Games with a 4-2 against Argentina on Friday. The win secures a berth to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England for the Americans and ends a streak of six straight Pan American Game titles for the Argentineans.
Taylor finished the tournament with three goals, helping Team USA to an undefeated record. In the final game, Taylor scored in the 16th minute to give the Americans a 2-0 lead at the time. After Argentina narrowed the gap to 2-1 three minutes later, but the United States responded with a goal off a penalty corner in the final minute of the first half.
Argentina came out in the second half with high intensity, and cut the USA lead to 3-2 in the 42nd minute. Despite receiving a yellow card early in the second half, the Americans continued to fight, and went ahead for good with four minutes remaining in regulation on a goal from Michelle Vitesse to secure the win.
The United States completed pool play with a 3-0 record, with wins coming against Mexico, Chile and Cuba. In the semifinals, the Americans squared off with Canada, where Team USA was able to walk away with a 4-2 win.
A first-team 2008 Longstrenth/NFHCA Division I and womensfieldhockey.com All-America, Taylor was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and the ECAC All-Star squad during her time with the Orange. A Honda Collegiate Women Sports Award finalist for field hockey, she was also the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player and a member of the All-BIG EAST Tournament Team.
Taylor made a huge impact with the Orange in 2008. Taylor was the statistical champion for points per game (3.29) and goals per game (1.29). Her 79 points and 31 goals are both Orange single-season records. Her point total ties for eighth (Jodi Carter, 1992-95) on SU's career list and her 14 assists rank third on Syracuse's single-season list. Taylor's points and goals are both Syracuse senior records. Taylor was also named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team.
The Orange return to J.S. Coyne Stadium to close out the regular season on Sunday for Senior Day against Bucknell at 2:00 p.m. SU will host the BIG EAST Tournament next weekend as the No. 2 seed.
