Seniors Martina Loncarica and Heather Susek were chosen to participate in the 2011 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Senior Game on Tuesday. Both Loncarica and Susek have been integral pieces to the Syracuse field hockey team during their careers with the Orange, and lead SU into the BIG EAST Tournament this weekend.
Loncarica, the program's all-time leader in points (135) and assists (63), is one of only two three-time All-Americans in Syracuse history. The 2011 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year has five goals and eight assists this season, and is the nation's active leader in career assists. Earlier this season, the Buenos Aires, Argentina native tied the school record for assists in a game (three) against Vermont. Loncarica's 36 career goals are also tied for fifth all-time at SU.
Susek, this week's BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, is tied for the team and conference lead in goals this season (17). She is currently tied for 19th in the nation in goals per game (0.89), and finished the regular season leading the BIG EAST in shots (75). The Plains, Pa. native was a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST Preseason Team, and cracked the top-ten of Syracuse's all-time scoring list with five points last weekend.
The NFHCA Senior Game will be held on Saturday, November 19 at the University of Louisville, the same weekend as the NCAA Final Four. Syracuse will host the BIG EAST Tournament this weekend at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will play No. 3 Villanova at 3:00 p.m. No. 1 seed Connecticut and No. 4 Louisville with square off in the early game at 12:30 p.m. The winners of the semifinal games will move on to the championship game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
