The Syracuse field hockey team closed the book on the 2011 season last weekend at the NCAA Tournament, finishing the year with a 19-4 record. The 2011 campaign saw the Orange win its sixth BIG EAST Tournament title in program history and reach the NCAA Tournament for the four consecutive season, and seventh appearance all-time.
SU concluded its season last weekend with a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to No. 4 Maryland in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in College Park, Md. after the Orange had defeated Richmond in the First Round, 2-0.
At one point during the year, the Orange had an 11-game winning streak where it was outscoring its opponents 57-9. SU was also a perfect 13-0 at home in J.S. Coyne Stadium during the year.
BIG EAST Success
Syracuse won its sixth BIG EAST Championship tournament title on Nov. 6 with a 3-2 victory against Connecticut. After going 5-1 in BIG EAST play during the regular season, the Orange secured the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.
SU shutout No. 3 seed Villanova in the semifinals, 3-0 before defeating top-seeded Connecticut, 3-2, in the championship game. Syracuse has also won seven BIG EAST regular season championships, the last coming in 2010.
Millman Has Breakout Season in 2011
Junior forward Kelsey Millman (Center Valley, Pa.) finished the season with 51 points on 19 goals and 13 assists. She led the BIG EAST in nearly every statistical category including points, points per game, goals, goals per game and game-winning goals.
During the BIG EAST Semifinals against Villanova, her goal broke Yvonne Milionis' 1990 record for most points as a junior. Millman was also one assist shy of tying the junior class record for assists in a season, currently held by Meg Ryan (2005) and Sherri Magsam (1988).
Her 51 points this season is tied for the third-most on the SU single-season record list, while her 19 goals and 13 assists are tied for fourth and ninth, respectively.
Millman was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, and earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week status twice during the season. She was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll two times in 2011.
Bradley Reaches Milestones
In her fifth season at the helm of the Orange in 2011, Ange Bradley coached in her 100th game with SU against Georgetown midway through the season.
Bradley has led the Orange to a 87-22 record during her tenure, including three straight BIG EAST Regular Season Championships, three conference tournament titles, and one Final Four appearance in 2008. Syracuse has reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four seasons.
Entering 2011, she had the fifth highest winning percentage among active Division I head coaches and the 12th most victories. She also has the ninth highest winning percentage all-time among Division I coaches.
Bradley also coached in her 300th game of her career against Villanova in the final weekend of the regular season. In 15 seasons as a head coach, she is 222-83 (.727). Bradley is a three-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year and was also named the National Coach of the Year in 2008.
She led the field hockey program to its first-ever No. 1 national ranking on Oct. 13, 2008, becoming the first women's team in Syracuse history to do so.
Bradley has coached 10 All-Americans in her time at Syracuse, including three First-Team selections. Under her tutelage, Syracuse has earned one BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and one Co-Offensive Player of the Year honor.
Foreign Flair
This season's Orange roster features six student-athletes from outside of the United States. Leonie Geyer and Laura Hahnefeldt come to Syracuse from Germany, Amy Kee from England, Iona Holloway from Glasgow, Martina Loncarica from Argentina and Liz McInerney from Ireland.
All six student-athletes have had a significant impact on Syracuse's success to this point in the season. Hahnefeldt, Holloway, Kee and McInerney have paced a defense that has a goals against average of 1.05 this season. McInerney has also contributed on the offensive side of the field, tallying five goals and 11 assists.
Loncarica is the program's all-time leader in points (139) and assists (65), and Geyer has scored 10 goals and added 10 assists this season.
