SYRACUSE, N.Y. - A 19-0 run to end the first half helped No. 1 Syracuse (13-0) separate from Tulane (11-2), as the Orange defeated the Green Wave, 80-61, on Thursday night at the Carrier Dome.
The win against the Green Wave kept Syracuse perfect through its non-conference schedule, and the Orange has now started 13-0 for the third straight season.
Twelve Syracuse players found the scoring column, led by Dion Waiters with 15 points, followed by Kris Joseph with 13 and James Southerland with 10. Southerland also had a career-high four blocks. Freshman Michael Carter-Williams tallied a career-high seven points. Matt Tomaszewski connected on his only three-point attempt of the evening, keeping him a perfect four-of-four from long range on the season.
With the game knotted at 14, #C.J. Fair# broke the deadlock with a jumper from the baseline at the 10:09 mark of the first half, giving SU the advantage which the Orange would hold for the remainder of the game.
With the Orange leading 22-19, Joseph drained a three to jumpstart the 19-0 Orange run which span the final 5:46 of the half, and gave SU a 41-19 lead at the break.
Syracuse held Tulane at a distance in the second half, not allowing the Green Wave to within 15 points. SU's largest second half lead grew to 25 points, courtesy of a two free throws by senior Brandon Reese.
The Syracuse depth once again proved to be too much for the opposition, as the SU bench outscored the Green Wave reserves, 45-13. SU's defense held Tulane to 34 percent shooting for the game (17-of-50), and blocked 11 Green Wave shots. SU shot 51 percent for the game (26-of-51) and was 10-of-21 from long range.
Tulane was led by Kendall Timmons with 16 points and Ricky Tarrant with 15.
Syracuse begins BIG EAST Conference play next Wednesday, Dec. 28th, at home against Seton Hall. Tipoff set for 7:00 p.m. Fans can buy tickets online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
