SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Fab Melo recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and a record setting 10 blocks to lead No. 1 Syracuse (14-0, 1-0) past Seton Hall (11-2, 0-1) on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome. It was the BIG EAST Conference opener for both clubs.
Melo's 10 blocked shots is the most in a single game at Syracuse, bettering Etan Thomas' previous record of nine rejections, which he set on three different occasions in his career.
The Orange defense, which leads the nation in steals average, stifled the Pirates the entire night. SU held Seton Hall to 32 percent shooting (19-of-60), forced 23 Seton Hall turnovers and registered 17 steals on the evening.
Dion Waiters led three players in double-figures with 15 points. Melo (12) and Brandon Triche (11) also reached double-figures. Syracuse's bench outscored the Pirates 40-16, and the Orange held a 46-22 advantage on points in the paint.
Triche opened the scoring with a runner in the lane to give SU a 2-0 lead, and the Orange did not trail once in the game. A layup by Melo with 10 second remaining in the opening frame gave SU its largest lead of the half at 34-15 and SU would go into the break with that advantage.
A 14-4 run in the middle of the second half provided SU with its largest lead of the game at 69-36. The Orange committed just seven turnovers the entire game and shot 56.7 percent in the second half.
#C.J. Fair# led the Orange on the glass with eight rebounds, and also chipped in with nine points. Seton Hall's Jordan Theodore was the only Pirate to reach double-figures with 14 points. The 25,081 fans in attendance was the largest crowd this season.
The Orange is back in action on Jan. 1 as Syracuse travels to face DePaul (9-3, 0-0) in its first BIG EAST road game of the season. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m. (BIG EAST Network).
