SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Nicole Ferrara scored with 1:18 left in overtime to give Syracuse women's ice hockey (8-10) a 2-1 overtime victory over Lindenwood (1-16) on Saturday afternoon at the Tennity Ice Pavilion. The freshman's first career goal completed a comeback victory after Jessica Sorensen tied the game with 12:29 left after the Lions took a 1-0 lead early in the third period.
After Holly Carrie-Mattimoe found Margot Scharfe with a pass and her initial shot was blocked, Ferrara took the puck in the slot and let go a low wrister that beat Lindenwood goalie Taylor Fairchild to complete the weekend sweep for the Orange after Friday's 6-2 win over the Lions.
After two scoreless periods in which the Orange outshot the Lions, 33-12, Lindenwood got on the board first 1:47 into the third period when Caitlyn Post scored on the power play off an Alyssa West assist.
Sorenson tied things up with the Orange on the power play, taking a Caitlyn Roach pass and scoring her fifth of the season with 12:29 left in regulation.
For the game, SU outshot Lindenwood, 49-17, including registering all four shots of the overtime period.
Kallie Billadeau made 16 saves in goal to earn the victory, while Lindenwood's Fairchild turned aside 47 shots.
Both teams were 1-of-5 on the power play. SU was 0-of-4 until capitalizing on its lone power play opportunity in the third, while the Orange also killed off a late penalty to ensure the game went to overtime.
The Orange is back in action next weekend for a two-game set at Robert Morris on Friday and Saturday to open College Hockey America play.
