The Syracuse indoor track & field teams began its season this weekend with a local meet at the Cornell Relays in Ithaca, N.Y. The Orange entered many of its younger competitors into events during the meet, which saw two student-athletes with ECAC or IC4A qualifying performances.
"For an early season meet, we had some surprising performances, which bodes well for the winter meets," head coach Chris Fox said.
Senior Patrick Geoghegan got the Orange started with a third place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:02.42 against competitors from Binghamton, Geneseo State and Cortland State.
After qualifying for the finals in the 60-meter dash, Jihaad Howard and Darryl White also qualified for the IC4As with a sixth (6.93) and seventh place (6.93) finish, respectively. White also ran in the 300-meter, finishing 21st with a time of 37.14 while teammate Tyler McCully was right on his heels in 22nd (37.17).
In the 4x800-meter relays, SU entered two squads into the event, and the quartets of Joseph Bubniak, Andrew Nelson, Jon Squeri and Zach Rivers finished sixth (8:11.59) while Woo Kim, Sean Carney, Ryan Ellis and Chris Connolly trailed closely behind in seventh place with a time of 8:17.78. Kim, Carney, Ellis and Connolly also competed individually in the 500-meter run, where Carney led the team with a 14th place finish at 1:09.33.
On the women's side, Kelly Anne McCarthy, Nancie Sophias, Julissa Wilson and Michelle Riley finished just behind two Cornell squads and Geneseo State in the 4x800-meter relay in fourth place with a time of 9:51.82. McCarthy, Sophias and Wilson each ran in the 500-meter event, as well, where freshman teammate Beth Wright led the Orange with a 12th place finish at 1:22.09. Wright would also contend in the distance medley relay, joining Maura Linde, Riley and Brenna Symoniak for a third place finish (12:43.59).
The 3,000-meter run saw SU enter four student-athletes as Carly Hamond (10:17.62), Kimberly Spano (10:32.06) and Katie Weisenberger (10:33.61) finish in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
In the 60-meter dash, Ashley Keyes and Sabrina Cammock followed a one-two preliminary event with the same result in the finals as Keyes crossed the line at 7.84 and Cammock at 7.85. Rachel Johnson also reached the finals, finished in 12th (8.18).
