SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team remains undefeated in conference play so far this season after a dominating 7-0 win over BIG EAST foe West Virginia Saturday afternoon at the Drumlins Tennis Center. The Orange (8-2, 4-0) won every singles match and two of three doubles matches to secure the 7-0 win over the Mountaineers (2-7, 0-2).
Senior co-captain Simone Kalhorn earned her 90th career victory when she teamed up with junior Alessondra Parra at the No. 2 doubles spot and defeated West Virginia's pairing of Liv Pettersson and Emily Mathis, 8-2. Freshman Maddie Kobelt and junior co-captain Emily Harman extended their dominance at the No. 1 doubles spot, beating WVU's Mary Chupa and Veronica Cardenas, 8-6, and now have a 7-2 doubles record when paired at the top spot. Senior Jacquelynn Tang and freshman Aleah Marrow had the only loss of the day, losing to the Mountaineer pairing of Melis Tanik and Ashley Pilsbury, 3-8.
Parra broke her two-match losing streak at the No. 1 singles position, overpowering Tanik in sets of 7-5 and 6-4. Kobelt shifted back into the No. 2 singles spot and won her sixth-straight singles match by dismissing Mathis in straight sets of 6-4 and 6-3. Marrow also snapped a losing streak at the No. 4 singles position by handily beating Cardenas, 6-1, 6-2.
Senior co-captain Christina Tan earned the 85th overall win of her career after a three-set battle with Chupa at the No. 3 singles spot. After winning the first set, 6-2, Tan lost the second to Chupa but came back to win the point after a 6-4 showing in the third set.
Kalhorn snagged overall career win number 91 when she defeated Pilsbury at the No. 5 singles position. Freshman Eva Raskiewicz returned to singles play at the No. 6 spot and easily beat West Virginia's Catie Wickline, 6-0, 6-0.
With the victory, the Orange secured its 19th consecutive win at home, a streak that dates back to 2009. Syracuse hasn't lost a match at home since a 4-3 loss to Iowa State on February 22, 2009.
Saturday's match was originally scheduled to be played Sunday, Feb. 27 but was moved to Feb. 26th because of weather delays that cancelled Syracuse's match with Villanova. The Orange and Wildcat matchup will be rescheduled for a later date this season.
Syracuse will hit the court again March 5 when the team travels to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers in another BIG EAST test for the Orange.
