
Late Surge Lifts Hoyas Past Orange 64-56

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A late 9-0 run lifted 11/11 Georgetown (19-5, 8-4) past 12/13 Syracuse (20-5, 7-5), 64-56, on Wednesday at the Carrier Dome.
The Hoyas held Syracuse without a field goal in the final six minutes of the contest to earn its seventh consecutive win.
Sophomore Brandon Triche netted SU's first four points of the second half to maintain its lead, 35-31. Georgetown fought back to take a 41-38 lead with 14 minutes remaining. Four consecutive points by freshman #C.J. Fair# knotted the game at 41 at the 11:46 mark.
The two teams traded baskets for the next five minutes and Syracuse held a 53-49 advantage with six minutes remaining in the second half. Georgetown's offensive exploded with nine unanswered points to claim a 61-55 lead for the Hoyas with two minutes on the clock.
Georgetown went 3-4 from the free throw line in the final minute to clinch the victory.
Syracuse's defense helped the Orange overcome an early deficit in the first half. Syracuse registered five blocked shots and drew two offensive changes to slow the Hoyas' offensive change.
GU took an 8-3 lead after the first three minutes, but two three-pointers by junior Kris Joseph helped the Orange stay within striking distance, 16-10, with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
Syracuse responded with a 15-4 run that gave the Orange a 25-21 lead with four minutes remaining in the first half. Fair scored four consecutive points during that run to produce SU's first lead of the night, 18-16.
Georgetown's Jason Clark completed a three-point play to regain the lead 26-25 with just more than two minutes left in the opening period. Syracuse answered right back and held a 29-26 lead with one minute remaining.
The Hoyas' Hollis Thompson drained a three-pointer as the shot clock expired to tie the game once again, 29-29, with 15 seconds left. On the final possession of the half, freshman Dion Waiters' jumper sent the Orange to the locker room leading 31-29.
Freshman Baye Moussa Keita tallied a career high five blocked shots and pulled down four rebounds. Fair finished with 12 points and five rebounds, while Joseph scored a game-high tying 14 points. Triche was SU's third player in double-figures with 11 points.
The Hoyas outshot Syracuse in the second half going 13-26 (.500), while holding the Orange to 8-22 (.364) shooting from the floor.
Georgetown, led by head coach John Thompson, was paced by Austin Freeman's 14 points.
Syracuse will travel to Louisville, Ken. to take on 16/15 Louisville on Saturday, February 12 at 12 p.m. Syracuse fans can catch the Orange against the Cardinals on ESPN.
