WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team secured its third road victory of the season after a resounding 7-0 win over Army at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center Friday afternoon. The Orange (12-4) swept its second-straight opponent and improved its road record to 3-4 on the season while the Black Knights (14-7) lost its fourth-straight match.
Junior co-captain Emily Harman and freshman Maddie Kobelt continued their dominance at the No. 1 doubles spot and defeated Army's pairing of Annie Houghton and Jessica Ahn, 8-2. The Orange duo has won nine matches in a row at the top spot and improve to 13-2 as a pair for the season.
Senior co-captain Simone Kalhorn and freshman Aleah Marrow again paired up to win their second match in a row at the No. 2 doubles spot, defeating the Black Knight pairing of Annie Hang and Emily Stein in an 8-3 decision. Junior Alessondra Parra combined with senior co-captain Christina Tan to defeat Army's Margaret Iliev and Carly Riney, 8-3 at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Singles play featured more domination by the Orange with every match being decided in straight sets for the second match in a row for Syracuse.
Kobelt secured her 25th career victory with a win over Ahn at the No. 2 singles position while her doubles counterpart, Harman, found similar success at the No. 1 spot and secured her second-straight singles win over Houghton.
Parra and Kalhorn overpowered their singles opponents at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively, while Kalhorn won her fourth-straight singles match at the No. 5 spot, defeating Army's Della Taylor in sets of 6-1 and 6-2. The singles victory pushed Kalhorn to 20 singles wins for the season.
Marrow played at the No. 6 spot and secured her eighth singles win for the year.
The Orange stay on the road and hit the court again tomorrow when they take on BIG EAST foe St. John's Saturday at 1:15 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend in a match against another conference opponent, Rutgers, Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in Piscataway, N.J..
