Volleyball Names Team Award Winners

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After posting a 23-9 record in 2010, the Syracuse volleyball team celebrated the season at their annual banquet on Sunday, Feb. 27 at the Genesee Grande Hotel. As part of the festivities, five players were recognized for their individual accomplishments during the season.

Junior outside hitter Noemie Lefebvre was named team MVP. Lefebrve, an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, led the Orange in kills (360) and digs (324). Lefebvre currently ranks fifth in school history with a career average of 2.83 digs per set.

The Alexia Tsairis Defensive Player of the Year Award went to senior team captain Sarah Hayes. Hayes was second on the team in service aces (29) and third on the team in digs with 244. The award is given in memory of Tsairis, who was one of 35 Syracuse students who tragically lost their lives in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988.

Senior outside hitter Mindy Stanislovaitis was recognized as the team's Most Improved Player. After averaging 1.19 kills per set in 2009, Stanislovaitis saw a tremendous jump in her offensive efficiency, as she recorded 2.31 kills per set in 2010.

Junior libero Ashley Williams was the recipient of the 2010 Abbie Bigelow Award for Courage. After only participating in part of the 2009 season due to injury, Williams was a major contributor for the Orange in 2010. She recorded 311 digs this past year. William's average of 3.21 digs per set was a team best.

Rounding out the award winners was senior Hayley Todd, who received the Verhulst Award for Sportsmanship. Todd, who was named to Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, recorded 333 kills in 2010. Todd's average of 2.95 kills per set was second on the Orange, behind Lefebvre.
