SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University softball team (33-11) swept a pair of non-conference games against Binghamton (20-17) on Thursday, thanks to an outstanding defensive performance. SU took game one, 5-0, versus the Bearcats and once again defeated the Upstate New York foe in game two, 4-0.
Jenna Caira turned in a solid performance on the mound, earning both wins in the circle for SU. Caira, who went the distance in game one, faced just 22 opposing batters, struck out eight and allowed just two hits. In game two, the right-handed hurler was just as dominate, striking out 11 in six innings of shutout work.
Lisaira Daniels and Hallie Gibbs led the offensive effort for the Orange. L. Daniels hit .571 in the doubleheader with four runs scored. Gibbs tallied three RBI and two hits, including a homerun in the twin bill. Lacey Kohl and Jasmine Watson each registered two RBI on the day.
In game one, Caira come out on fire, sitting down the first three Bearcats of the game by way of strikeout in the top of the first.
L. Daniels continued the strong start for the Orange with a base hit through the right side in the home half of the inning, while Gibbs gave the team an early lead, lacing a two-run homer to right center.
The Orange struck again in the bottom of fifth, coming up with a three-run rally to put away the game. Veronica Grant and L. Daniels reached base on a fielder's choice. Kohl stepped up to the plate and hit a bomb that brought the two runners home to give SU the 5-0 lead it would hold onto for the remainder of the game.
Game two began in a déjà vu-like fashion, as Caira retired the Bearcats side once again on three consecutive strikeouts.
Syracuse and Binghamton were deadlocked in a scoreless tie until the bottom of the third, when SU plated its first run of the game. With L. Daniels and Kohl on first and second in the bottom of the third, Gibbs logged a one-bagger, allowing L. Daniels to score.
Grant showed off her defensive prowess in the top of the fourth, making an outstanding diving catch for the Orange in centerfield to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Watson extended the Orange lead with a two-RBI double to right field. Syracuse sealed its victory in the sixth, as Stephanie Watts nailed a RBI double to put the Orange on top, 4-0.
