Orange Hosts Notre Dame in Nationally Televised Contest

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 13 Syracuse goes for its second consecutive victory when it hosts Notre Dame on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The Orange improved its BIG EAST record to 2-0 with a victory against Connecticut on Friday. Overall, Syracuse is 4-6. The Fighting Irish are 5-6 overall, including 2-1 in conference action. Admission is free of charge.
The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network. Jason Knapp and Sheehan Stanwick Burch will have the call. Fans can also listen to the game live on WJPZ 89.1FM in the Syracuse area and on Orange All Access on SUathletics.com. THE SERIES
Sunday's game will be the 16th all-time meeting between Syracuse and Notre Dame. SU holds a 10-5 advantage in the series. Last season the teams split the two meetings.
TEAMS MEET IN REMATCH OF BIG EAST SEMIFINALS
Syracuse and Notre Dame will meet for the first time since they played four overtimes in the semifinals of last year's BIG EAST Tournament. SU's Halley Quillinan's scored with 12 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 10-10 and force overtime. After Notre Dame took an 11-10 lead, Quillinan again tied the score with 23 seconds remaining in the first OT period, sending the game into sudden-victory overtime sessions. Syracuse finally broke through in the fourth OT when Christina Dove scored at the 2:20 mark to give the Orange a 12-11 victory. Quillinan led the Orange with four goals, including the 200th of her career.
OFFENSE COMES ALIVE
Syracuse's offense enjoyed one of its most productive performances of the season in its victory against Connecticut. The 17 goals against the Huskies are the most the Orange has scored in a game since it posted 19 in the season opener against Colgate. SU tallied 11 goals in the second half against UConn, equaling its previous mark for most goals in a half. Syracuse also had 11 goals in the first half against Colgate.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
In its first home game since February, Syracuse scored nine unanswered goals to start the second half on its way to a 17-9 victory against Connecticut on Friday, April 8. Sophomore Michelle Tumolo led a balanced scoring attack with three goals and three assists for a team-high six points.
Junior Sarah Holden scored on an assist from Tumolo for the first goal of the second half to break a 6-6 tie and give Syracuse the lead for good. Holden's goal sparked the Orange on a 9-0 scoring run that gave the Orange a 15-6 lead 6:03 left in the game. Catherine Rodriguez and Katie Webster each had two goals during the run.
Syracuse's defense held Connecticut scoreless for more than 27 minutes before Jordan Christopher found the back of the net with 5:39 remaining. The Orange recorded two unassisted goals to take its biggest lead of the game at 17-7 with 2:48 left in the game. The Huskies scored twice in the final minute for the 17-9 final.
Tumolo tied her career high with three goals and posted single-game highs with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Rodriguez and Webster finished with three goals apiece.
SCOUTING NOTRE DAME
Notre Dame defeated Villanova 15-4 on Friday to improve its league record to 2-1. Overall, the Fighting Irish are 5-6 this season.
Maggie Tamasitis is Notre Dame's leading scorer in 2011 with 35 points on 13 goals and a team-best 22 assists. Jenny Granger leads the Fighting Irish with 18 goals and is second on the squad in points with 26. Overall, eight players have scored 10 or more goals this season.
Ellie Hiling has started every game in goal for Notre Dame this season. She has a 9.07 goals-against average and a .414 save percentage.
