WORCHESTER, Mass. – The Syracuse University men's rowing team, ranked seventh in the latest USRowing men's varsity eight poll, showed its speed, strength and depth at the 2011 Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 15, 2011 on Lake Quinsigamond. The varsity eight finished fifth in the Grand Final, the highest finish at the Eastern Sprints during Dave Reischman's nine-year reign as head coach. The second varsity eight medaled with a third-place showing in the Grand Final, also SU's best finish during Reischman's tenure.
“Getting two crews into the Grand Final was our plan coming into Eastern Sprints. The varsity eight had a great race and was beaten by faster crews,” Reischman said. “The second varsity eight should be very proud; taking home a medal is a great accomplishment. All of our crews raced up to their level.”
The varsity eight, ranked sixth in the final EARC Heavyweight Varsity Eight Poll, placed fifth in the Grand Final with a time of 5:47.101. No. 1 Harvard on the Grand Final in 5:40.388. Syracuse advanced to the Grand Final with a time of 5:50.864 in its preliminary heat. Harvard won the heat in 5:47.822.
The seventh-ranked second varsity eight finished third in the Grand Final with a time of 5:53.182. No. 1 Harvard on the Grand Final in 5:49.013. The Orange qualified for the Grand Final with a time of 5:59.749 in its preliminary heat. Harvard took top honors with a time of 5:57.334.
The freshman eight, ranked 10th, placed fourth in the Petite Final and 10th overall. SU finished the course in 6:07.717. No. 6 Brown won the Petite Final in 6:02.408. Syracuse moved to the Petite Final with a time of 6:19.233 in its preliminary heat. No. 4 Northeastern won the heat in 6:09.702.
The Orange varsity four won the only V4 race of the day, crossing the finish line in 6:54.199. Northeastern finished second with a time of 7:01.892.
Syracuse returns to the water on Sunday, May 22, when it hosts Dartmouth for the Packard Cup at the Ten Eyck Boathouse located at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park.
